Sex Crimes In Florida

In Florida, there are several common sex-related criminal charges that people may face. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Sexual battery or rape: This crime involves forcing someone into sexual activity without their consent. It can happen through physical force, threats or taking advantage of someone who can’t consent.
  • Lewd battery: Lewd battery in Florida involves engaging in sexual activity with someone aged 12 to 15 or encouraging a minor under 16 to participate in harmful sexual acts.
  • Prostitution-related crimes: These offenses involve exchanging sexual acts for money. This includes offering or asking for sexual services as well as running a place where prostitution happens.
  • Internet sex crimes: These offenses involve illegal activities online, such as possessing or sharing child pornography, trying to meet minors for sexual purposes or organizing trips for sex acts with minors.

Knowing these offenses can help you understand what you might be facing and why it’s crucial to have a knowledgeable defense team on your side.

The Penalties For Sex Crimes In Florida

The penalties for sex crimes vary depending on the severity of the offense. For example, if an adult commits sexual battery against a child under 12, it is considered a capital felony. This means that the punishment can be either life imprisonment without parole or, in some cases, the death penalty.

If someone under 18 commits sexual battery against a child under 12, it’s considered a life felony. This can lead to life in prison or a lengthy prison term and a fine of up to $15,000.

Additionally, it is a felony if a person in a position of trust or authority, like a family member or guardian, commits sexual battery against someone under 18. This can result in up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

The state imposes strict punishments to protect minors and hold offenders accountable. If you’re dealing with these issues, talk to an experienced lawyer to understand your options.
